Taking the plunge to start your own business can feel scary and overwhelming. For whatever reason, many women feel more comfortable working for someone else, or simply prioritizing the care of their children. As a former catering account executive, and then stay at home mom, I can 100% relate! A few years ago, after about four years of staying home full time with my children, I got the itch to go back to work. Because of my husband’s work commitments, which included long hours at the office and a ton of travel, it wasn’t going to be practical for me to return to an office environment. After a fair amount of research, and lots of bouncing ideas off of friends, I decided to get my certification to work as a pediatric sleep consultant. It felt a bit overwhelming to build something from scratch, but it was also a very empowering experience. Building my business has been one of my greatest accomplishments. I’m extremely proud of what I have created and I know that this is really just the beginning.
Now that I train, mentor and certify others to work as sleep consultants, I’ve noticed a few limiting beliefs that repeatedly come up with almost everyone I speak with about the sleep consultant certification program. These thoughts that arise in a woman’s mind are really just thoughts, rather than facts. I love having conversations with women about starting their entrepreneurial journey and showing them that they can in fact launch and grow a successful business if they choose to do so.
“The market is too saturated”
This is an objection I hear quite often when speaking with those that are interested in becoming sleep consultants. They want to do this work, they are passionate about it, but they think they are too late to the game as if this is an MLM. There is no such thing as a saturated market in the service industry. Would anyone ever say that there are too many hairstylists? Or too many personal trainers? What about therapists? Of course, some of these professionals are busier than others. Of course, some have a very large clientele while others are still building. All that being said, no one would ever say that you shouldn’t take up one of these professions because there are enough professionals out there already.
“I don’t know if I will be able to make any money”
If you aren’t working towards anything, how can you expect to be successful? Growing a business is a process, one that takes hard work. That being said, if you opt to do nothing, you have zero shot at making it. You only have a chance if you try. My favorite part about the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management’s sleep consultant certification program is the mentorship provided to our students. We pride ourselves on supporting those that enroll in the course so that everyone feels empowered to be successful.
“I’m not great at using social media”
Being a pro at Facebook and Instagram are not prerequisites for being a successful sleep consultant. Using social media to connect with potential customers and professionals in related fields is certainly a good place to start, but it’s not the only way. Connecting with pediatricians, preschools, community centers and others in the parenting space are all great ways to get your name out there.
“I feel like it will be so embarrassing if I’m not successful”
I hear this all the time. Frankly, I think it’s really sad. Women should cheer each other on and build each other up rather than tear each other down. The mentorship program through the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management will ensure that you have a support system even if you don’t have that from your own circle. There is nothing more powerful than a woman taking a chance on herself and finding some level of success. Only you are responsible for defining what success means. The journey through building a business is not one that always happens overnight, but the gratification that comes from tiny little moments of success is felt through the entire process.
