The Working Stay at Home Mom

We moms tend to put ourselves into one of two boxes. You’re either a stay at home mom, or a working mom. I was a stay at home mom for five years before starting my business as a sleep consultant. My days were filled with long stroller walks, baby music classes, play dates, lunches with friends and nap schedules. There was a structure to our day but my entire identity was wrapped up in my children. 

My pride came from dressing them in the cutest clothing and packing them perfect little bento box lunches to take to the park.

I loved every minute of this time in my life, but there came a point when I started longing for more. I missed the feeling that I got from being successful at work. I missed bringing income into our family and I missed having something that was completely my own.

Building a small business from the ground up was an incredibly rewarding experience, and just what I needed. I started using my brain in a way that I hadn’t done in five years, and it felt amazing! Contributing to our household income again after a five year hiatus felt really great. As my business continues to grow, it affords us opportunities that we never had while I was not working.

There were many things that changed when my sleep consulting business took off, but one big thing stayed the same.

I absolutely still consider myself to be a stay at home mom. My job as a sleep coach is something that I can do largely from my phone and my iPad. I still do all the things with my kids that I used to do before I started working. 

I love that I get to have this super successful business and still be 100% present for my children. I love that my children see me working. They are so proud that their mom is helping other families to teach their children to sleep independently. They know all about my work and they love to get involved and help in any ways that they can! I may be working, but I’ll always be a stay at home mom to them!
