When I was learning to become a certified sleep consultant while working full-time, I had to shift my schedule to accommodate my new business’s needs. Now as a certified sleep consultant, I’m able to work alongside my kids throughout the day on a flexible schedule. I can do this all while helping families get more sleep. Although I enjoy the freedom and flexibility that comes along with doing this full-time, others choose to work their businesses part-time or even alongside their current jobs.
Those who enroll in the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management’s (CPSM) sleep consultant certification course come from different backgrounds. There are some graduates who learned about sleep training because they went through it with their own kids. Then they decided that they wanted to learn more and create an income while doing something they love. Others were already working in a similar field, whether as a postpartum doula or newborn care specialist, and opted to add sleep consulting to their offerings.
I spoke with Tori, one of CPSM’s graduates and the owner and founder of Get Rest Sleep Consulting. Tori works full-time as a hairstylist, so she brings a very unique perspective to the group. Tori and I met through a parenting Facebook group. I made a post offering a complimentary “Ask Me Anything” sleep consultation call to the first ten people who responded. Fortunately, Tori was one of them.
Luckily, Tori stayed in touch. When she realized that she wanted to help families get more rest by working as a certified sleep consultant, CPSM was the perfect fit to make that dream a reality.
Tori chose to get her certification through CPSM because she loved the flexibility and community aspect of the program. She liked how the information was presented in a way that made sense. She was surprised that CPSM taught all the sleep training techniques, whereas other courses only focused on a few methods.
Even while working full-time, Tori was able to complete the course in about two and a half months. CPSM starts off by teaching about the Science of Sleep. Tori loved that she was able to gain an understanding of what exactly was happening from a scientific perspective. The material is broken down in a way that makes sense and is easy to understand.
Because CPSM started teaching the important stuff right away, Tori was able to help her friends and family and gain confidence while she was learning. The business building section was extremely helpful to her as well. She was able to successfully launch her business while juggling being a mom to a young baby and working full-time!
Tori works long hours at the hair salon. However, she’s able to find time to message back and forth with sleep consulting clients in between hair styling appointments. She’s super-organized and has streamlined the process of writing sleep plans by keeping a database of files and templates on her computer.
A lot of people feel overwhelmed and as if they can’t add one more thing to their plate. However, Tori always believed that if you love what you do, you’re able to prioritize and make time for it. At the moment, Tori is truly working on her sleep consulting business as a side hustle.
To her, being able to do both hair styling and sleep consulting is the perfect mix. Tori appreciates the fact that if her situation changes, she can always pivot and do more sleep consulting and less hair styling. She has full control of where her business goes, and that’s exciting!
Tori loves the support she receives from the community in CPSM’s Facebook group. Whenever she has a question, she is supported by both myself and the other sleep consultants in the group. If you run into a tricky situation, you have the support of the community, where you’re able to ask questions about specific situations and get the help you need. Since every single situation is unique, the support that comes from being able to consult with other community members is invaluable.
Because CPSM’s program is self-paced, there is no pressure to finish it within a certain amount of time. You’ll start learning immediately, and with that knowledge you’ll be able to start helping people right away. CPSM’s course prepares you to get your business off the ground and you’ll have the support of the community and a database of knowledge at your fingertips.
If you’ve been thinking about adding another source of income to the mix, or if you’ve been working full or part-time and have always wondered what it would be like to start your own business on the side (who knows where it could go one day!) I’d love to speak with you.
I encourage you to check out the Becoming a Sleep Consultant group on Facebook where you’ll find more information on starting a home-based business as a certified sleep consultant no matter what your professional background. If you loved hearing Tori’s story and are ready to make the leap, you can enroll here and start the road to your certification today. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes you!
