Some people assume that what makes a great sleep consultant is having a medical background, or years of experience, or some kind of “perfect” personality for the job.

But that’s really not what I see.

The consultants who go on to do really well in this work are the ones who are genuinely excited about it. They’re passionate. They’re interested. They want to learn. They feel called to support families who are in the thick of it, because they understand how hard it can be.

I had a call like this just recently with someone interested in becoming a sleep consultant. She’s currently being supported by a sleep consultant herself, and her experience has been so transformative that she immediately started thinking, “I want to do this for other families.”

For her, this isn’t about building a big business. She’s not getting into this for the money. She just lit up talking about the prospect of learning and being able to help moms.

By the time I finished recording this podcast, she had already enrolled in CPSM, and I cannot wait for her to get started.

This could be you too.

What are you waiting for?

Intro: Welcome to Becoming a Sleep Consultant! I’m your host Jayne Havens, a certified sleep consultant and founder of both Snooze Fest by Jayne Havens and Center for Pediatric Sleep Management.

On this podcast, I’ll be discussing the business side of sleep consulting. You’ll have an insider’s view on launching, growing, and even scaling a sleep consulting business. This is not a podcast about sleep training. This is a podcast about business building and entrepreneurship.

Jayne Havens: So every single week, I have to figure out what is going to go on this podcast. Sometimes I have interviews lined up. Sometimes I have a story that I want to share, and sometimes my brain is just completely empty, and I feel like I’ve got nothing. This week was one of those weeks where I just felt like my brain was empty. I had nothing to share, and I had planned to map out a recent client success story. I was going to share a story about a family that I helped just a couple of weeks ago. They’re a really special family, and I thought, I’ll just tell their story. It’s a good one.

I was writing out notes for it. I was trying to map it all out, and it was just feeling like it was falling flat. It’s getting late. It’s almost my bedtime. I like to have these podcasts recorded about a week in advance. Today is Wednesday. Podcasts come out on Tuesday, so I’m already a day behind. I just didn’t know what I was going to talk about. And then, just a minute ago, I had a discovery call with somebody who is going to enroll in CPSM, and I was like, “Oh, this is such a good story. I’m going to share it on the podcast.”

So I just got off of Zoom with somebody who is currently being supported by a CPSM grad. She is a mom. She’s a stay-at-home mom. She never thought that she was ever going to get pregnant, and she did, which is such a miracle and so special. This little baby of hers is the love of her life. And for eight or nine months, sleep was really, really hard. It was a disaster. I think she was complaining to her pediatrician, and her pediatrician was like, “I actually, I have a solution for you. I have a name. I have somebody that I want you to speak with.”

And so this mom was referred to a CPSM grad who is a very, very good sleep consultant, and this sleep consultant has changed this mom’s life. The baby is sleeping through the night as of night two working with a sleep consultant. She didn’t even know that sleep consultants existed. She thought it was a total scam when she heard about it. She knew nothing of the sort. She trusted her pediatrician, hired this sleep consultant, and on night two, her baby went from waking—I can’t remember what she said—8 or 10 times a night to sleeping through the night. And this mom, her mind was blown. She just couldn’t believe it.

They are not even finished working together yet. It’s a 14-day contract. They’re on day 10. This mom hopped onto my calendar and said, “I want to do this.”

What I love about this story is a few things. One, her own transformative experience has led her to want to help others, which I always just think is such an amazing — it’s sort of, it’s like the best reason for getting into this work. When you’ve experienced it yourself, and you know what it feels like to be on one side of the story and then on the other side of the story, being so sleep deprived and then feeling so good, is just such — it’s such a transformative experience for a mom. And I’m so glad that she had that experience. And then she wants to share it with others, which is incredible.

For her, she said to me on the call, this really isn’t about the money for her. Of course, it would be nice for her to make a little money, but she just loves to learn. She told me she loves school, and she wants to go back to school and learn how to be a sleep consultant. And I love that, because she’s really just leading with passion and excitement. She just wants to learn and help others.

There are no better reasons for getting into this field, for getting into this line of work, than the reasons that this person expressed to me on our discovery call today. We just hit it off. I really thought she was delightful. I hope that she listens to this and knows that it’s totally about her. She is going to enroll in CPSM, and she’s going to join our community. I have no doubt that she’s going to be an excellent sleep consultant, and I have no doubt that she’s going to make some money doing it.

I know that she said she didn’t really care about that. That wasn’t her focus. But I really, truly believe that when you lead with passion and you lead with excitement and joy for what you’re doing, the money follows. And so I’m just excited to share this story because I know that a lot of people that listen to this podcast are people who are not yet sleep consultants, and they’re thinking, “Is this for me? Can I do this? Will I make a good sleep consultant? Will I be able to build a successful business?”

What I want to say to you is that if you’re passionate about it, if you’re excited about it, if you just feel like you want to learn more and you want to help other moms, I have no doubt that you will be amazing at this work. And so I hope anybody listening to this who’s on the fence, thinking about jumping in—has been maybe binging the podcast for who knows how long, lurking on my email list, quietly hanging out in the Becoming a Sleep Consultant Facebook group—take this as your sign to hop onto a call with me.

Let’s meet face to face. Let’s hit it off on Zoom. Let’s have a great conversation, and I hope you will join us inside of the CPSM community very, very soon. I’m going to keep this short and sweet because I am actually in a hotel room in Tampa. Tomorrow, I am leaving for a four-day cruise with a handful of doulas for some continuing education and networking. And it’s late, so I’m going to wrap it up, get this podcast locked and loaded for next week, and I hope you all have a fantastic day.
