During discovery calls with people considering enrolling in the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management, one question comes up often: isn’t the market saturated? With the growing popularity of sleep consultants, some worry that there are already so many people doing this work that they won’t be able to find clients. On its face, the answer to this question is no- a very small percentage of new parents will use a sleep consultant, so there is lots of room for growth. But it’s also worth considering why people ask this question and what they are really trying to understand.
When someone asks about a saturated market, I don’t hear them asking about the ratio of consultants to babies, or how difficult it is to show up on a search engine. The heart of this question is self-doubt. What they’re usually asking is: do I have a chance? And the answer to that is always yes.
With any business you could start, there is competition in the world. The goal is to find your niche and identify a way you can excel beyond the competition. Even if there were a million sleep consultants on your block, there is something you can do better than them. CPSM is built not just to teach you the skills to offer sleep consulting, but also the skills to be a great business person. From networking to marketing to growth, the course will give you every tool you need to be the best at what you do.
Would you say that the market for lactation consultants is saturated? Probably not, because almost every new parent will see a lactation consultant at some point. With over 3.6 million babies born each year, that’s a lot of consultants and a very large market. The same could be said about birth and postpartum doulas, newborn photographers, or any other industry that works with new parents.
Sleep consulting is not yet as mainstream as lactation consulting, but in an ideal world, there would be a sleep consultant for every new baby. One of the best ways to make this happen is to normalize the practice. When you start telling people about what you do, they’ll learn that this is even an option, and share it with friends and family. In a way, we are creating our own market as we share about this work.
It is true that virtually anyone can become certified, create a website, and call themselves a sleep consultant. However, most people will not put in the work necessary to make that a true career. While many programs teach you how to be a good consultant, they don’t always teach the business side of this work. This is what leaves many people second guessing themselves, asking whether the market is saturated, or more accurately if they will find clients.
The Center for Pediatric Sleep Management’s course is designed to bring out the entrepreneur in you, offering concrete tools to create and scale your business. These skills will set you apart from other sleep consultants and ensure your success.
