5 Signs You Can Become A Successful Sleep Consultant

Sleep consultant

Whether you’re ready for a new career or looking for a side hustle, you may be curious if you should become a sleep consultant. This is potentially a major decision so it’s understandable that you would want to be sure. There are actually a few signs that you may already have what it takes to become a successful sleep consultant.

As a sleep consultant, you’ll be tasked with helping families find ways to create healthy sleep habits for their children. Parents often look for somebody with a warm personality to support them during the sleep training process as this can often feel stressful for parents. Not every family is the same so you will use your knowledge and expertise to assist each family in ways that may be unique to them.

As a sleep consultant, you own and run your own business. Getting clients will be up to you and how you market and present yourself. You don’t need experience, but you do need motivation. With the proper training, goals, and passion for supporting families, becoming a sleep consultant can be a fulfilling and rewarding career.

5 Signs You Can Become a Successful Sleep Consultant

If you are wondering if you are cut out for this career, check out the top five signs below. You can absolutely become a sleep consultant.

1. You Love Helping Others

One of the most important signs that you would make a fantastic sleep consultant is your love for helping others. The sole purpose of sleep consultants is to help parents and caregivers get more sleep by helping their little ones build healthy sleep habits.

While not every family struggling with sleep will hire a sleep consultant, many families are seeking this type of support. While the information on how to sleep train a baby or toddler is readily available online, many parents appreciate the one-on-one guidance and support from a sleep coach through the process. For those parents who desire this type of support, help from a sleep consultant is invaluable!

It is truly incredible how much of a difference sleep consultants make to each family that they help. If you’re a parent, you can probably understand how much a newborn or even a toddler can disrupt sleep for everybody in the house. If you love problem-solving and helping others, you should definitely consider becoming a sleep consultant.

2. You Have a Warm and Comforting Personality

When a family decides to hire a sleep consultant, it is not always easy. It takes a lot of trust to bring somebody into your home, whether that be physically or virtually. This is often a very vulnerable time for parents. They may be first-time parents or seasoned with four kids. Either way, they’ve reached a point where they feel they need help and they called you.

Having a warm, comforting, and trustworthy personality is key. Does this mean that you have to be perfect or have an angelic voice? No. But you do need to be able to hold rapport and be empathetic with each family while supporting them in this sleep journey.

3. You Can Easily Adapt

Each family is different and if you have kids, you know how unpredictable they can be. Having the ability to easily adapt as a sleep consultant is very important. Each client and each child that you work with may need completely different approaches when it comes to establishing healthy sleep habits.

Sometimes, children may respond to one method and then begin a new habit that’s counterproductive to the main objective. This would require some adaptation in the approach and would normally be so frustrating to parents. As a sleep consultant with the ability to adapt, you will be able to pivot and help your clients get the sleep that everyone deserves.

4. You’re Willing to Collaborate

While adaptation is important, so is collaboration. In some cases, you may need to refer the parents back to their pediatrician, a lactation specialist, or another provider. You may also need to refer mom to a therapist if she is struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety, or if extreme sleep deprivation has taken its toll. This article from the Sleep Foundation has great information on sleep deprivation in new parents. As their sleep consultant, your methods will only be successful if everybody is healthy and happy.

There’s a reason I call it collaboration. Deferment does not mean that a sleep consultant isn’t necessary. It just means that other issues may need to be addressed prior to sleep habits falling into place. Even when outside care is not needed, sleep consultants need to collaborate with the parents. Parents will always have the best understanding of their children and family. If you’re willing to put in a little team effort, become a sleep consultant and put those skills to work!

5. You’re Self-Motivated

Since sleep consultants usually own their own businesses, you will need to be self-motivated. You don’t have a boss to tell you to do a certain amount of work. If you aren’t already used to being self-employed, you will need to shift your mindset into that of a business owner.

You Have What It Takes to Become a Successful Sleep Consultant

The clients you sign, and therefore the income you earn, are all dependent on your effort and motivation. That being said, don’t let it scare you. The CPSM sleep consultant certification course will help you start your business and give you the confidence to become a fantastic sleep consultant.
